Southeast Whitehouse
The Southeast White House is located on Pennsylvania Avenue one mile east of the Anacostia River in Southeast Washington, D.C. It is affectionately known in the community as the Little White House due to its distinctive architecture and its location four miles east of the "real" White House. The Southeast White House is situated in an area that is often referred to as the forgotten quadrant of the city because of the limited number of social services and assistance available to the community. Demographically, the median income is $17,000 per year. 22% of the population live in public housing and 35% qualify for public assistance. 77% of the children live in single-parent families. The Southeast White House is a "house on a hill for all people."

Purpose
The Southeast White House serves as a:

  • place for reconciliation for all that divides the city and the city from the rest of the world
  • refuge and resource center serving the needs of the Randle Highlands, Hill Crest, Penn Branch, Congress Heights, and Fort Dupont communities in Southeast Washington, D.C.
  • base for mentoring and other forms of support to the local youth population (approximately 150 children served)
  • gathering place for individuals and groups working with the poor and disenfranchised of the District of Columbia and the Washington Metropolitan Area
  • training group for those seeking a greater exposure to the inner-city and related urban issues

People
At the Southeast White House, a major emphasis is placed on relationships. The house is hosted by a staff of volunteers who serve those who come to the house in need of lifestyle changes, jobs, fellowship, volunteer opportunities, friendship, and love. It is a place of reconciliation – an environment where urban and suburban, rich and poor, black and white, and young and old can come together. The Southeast White House seeks to build up local churches, non-profits, and other community groups serving the poor in Washington, D.C. and striving to offer every person that passes through its doors the opportunity to know that they are a friend held in high regard.
